We are on the hunt for an eagle-eyed, uber-organised and collaborative Studio Manager to join our growing team and support our mission to help academics and the public sector tell visual stories for a better world.


The purpose of this role will be to:

  • delight our clients by building meaningful relationships from enquiry right through to aftercare;

  • enable our team to be the most creative foxes possible through stellar project management and seamless project delivery;

  • inspire the next generation of visual storytellers in academia through our communications on social media, podcast and Nifty events.

You'll be working with clients from the UN and international parliaments, to universities and governments across the world. No day will be the same – you could be overseeing projects from animations explaining the latest developments in climate change research, to live illustration of events revolutionising domestic violence policy!


Starting at £40,000 pro rata.

Full time – would discuss part time roles for right candidate

Annual bonus of up to 5% based on performance

Remote working with 2 days a month at our office in Barnsley, South Yorkshire


The Role – you’ll be:

  • Responsible for managing the workflow of the team, with a close eye on project progress, scheduling and capacity planning, so we deliver impactful stories for social good every single time.

  • A visionary for consistent and efficient processes, looking for ways to revolutionise our current systems wherever possible, so we save time and delight our clients (and team!).

  • A key contact for clients from onboarding through to project management and aftercare, managing and maintaining partnerships with warmth and authenticity.

  • Expanding our client network by building a business development strategy and representing Nifty externally at events and conferences across the UK and beyond.

  • Showcasing what we do and educating our clients through managing our social media channels and events.

  • Work closely with the team – especially our Admin Avenger Lizie – to ensure everyone is kept up to date and on track.

  • Remote working for most of your time; working in our co-working space alongside the team for our two-day team days once a month here in Barnsley; and travel to client meetings, conferences and events across the UK and beyond where appropriate (expenses paid of course!).


Requirements:

  • Demonstrable experience in a similar role

  • A collaborative, warm and can-do member of the team with incredible inter-personal and communication skills – you’ll be the go-to oracle for project information and support for our team and our clients!

  • A multi-tasking extraordinaire with exceptional organisation skills and the ability to efficiently prioritise competing demands.

  • A driving force for freeing up creative space for our team by ensuring we are running shipshape – efficiently, to budget and on time, using the best tools available.

  • An understanding of how a creative studio works – illustration, infographics and animation are what we do, so previous experience managing similar teams will help you hit the ground running.

  • An understanding of the research and academic world is desirable for even better relationships with clients.

  • Experience in successfully running social media channels.

We are on the hunt for a talented, self-starting creative fox to join our growing, award-winning team and support our mission to help academics and the public sector tell better stories for a better world. You'll be working with clients from the UN and international parliaments, through to universities internationally and global banks and governments.

We now have an incredible opportunity for an Illustrator with a flair for graphic design to bring our stories to life. The purpose of this role will be to make complex ideas engaging and inspire action, through glorious visuals like rich pictures, infographics, animation storyboards, reports, social media assets and web assets.

Starting salary - £27,000 pro rata for 4 days a week, remote with salary increments per year.

Why use visual storytelling?

Ever sat in a meeting and experienced death by PowerPoint? Received a 100 page report and wanted to face plant the desk? Bombarded by stats and got temporary amnesia?

In each of these situations, vital information falls on blind eyes and deaf ears due to overwhelm and a lack of clarity. This leads to stalled action, missed opportunities and stagnant business progress.

 Visual storytelling solves these problems.

Policy engagement is a goal for many researchers.

Demonstrating the value of your research to inform policy change is an essential way to generate research impact.

But how do you do it?

We were invited to scribe a session between parliamentary officials and university academics recently to address this question (you can see the scribed outputs here).

One comment that stuck out to us about how to get your research in front policy makers, was the ‘Wedding Cake Approach’

Policy makers are often trawling the internet and social media for experts on their area of policy interest. This means that researchers need to be VISIBLE and VOCAL about their research, and regularly, to be found and invited to give evidence.

One parliamentarian used the analogy of ‘it’s like eating a wedding cake’:

  • ‘You eat crumbs first’ - or you’ll read a researcher’s tweets to get a sense of their expertise first

  • ‘Then you’ll try a slice’ - you might go on to read a blog post or brief research summary

  • ‘Then you’ll dive into a whole tier’ - you then want to read an extended research overview or key recommendations

  • Finally you’ll end up demolishing the whole cake’ - then you might go on to read the whole research report itself.

What does this mean for researchers?

This means that you need to have a visible online presence where you are sharing your research, recommendations and thought leadership REGULARLY, in ACCESSIBLE WAYS and in DIFFERENT FORMATS and lengths.

This ensures that you are VISIBLE and VOCAL enough for policy makers to find you and start a conversation.

So how can researchers tell stories with impact?

Use the 'magical' story equation.

Stories = purpose + narrative structure + detail 

Story purpose

If your story has no purpose, there is no point in telling it. It’s like playing catch with someone who won’t throw the ball back.

According to leading visual communicator Dan Roam, there are 4 purposes for all communication:

  • To improve awareness of something 

  • To improve ability to do something

  • To change actions

  • To change beliefs

Once you have your purpose, you need a story structure to help achieve that purpose. Here's the best one for each:

  • Problem, Solution, Result for awareness - explain what the problem is and how your audience are struggling. Explain how you can offer a solution. Explain what the result is if your audience implement that solution.

  • The Mountain for ability - take your audience through stepping stones of knowledge to get them from ignorance at the bottom, to gradually more knowledgable in easy steps. All teaching looks like this.

  • Sparklines for actions - Nancy Duarte coined this. You start with why the situation is crap now, and then show your audience how it can be better with an input e.g. a product, a thought process, a course. Repeat this contrast, ending on a high ('how it could be').

  • Hero's Journey for beliefs - the million dollar structure. We have a hero (usually your audience) and set the context. Something terrible/momentous happens to them and we reach a climax of action where they try to overcome said event. They overcome it leading to falling action to lead us into the next story.

Now you have your purpose and your structure, you just need to add detail - people, places, problems and processes to bring them to life.
